1:43 Alfasud Gold Cloverleaf model project completed.

It's a little rough and ready, but the Alfasud QO custom build model is complete. It started out as a dark blue 5 door SC model (as seen below in the blog), which had the correct plastic bumpers, steel wheels and tan interior.

The body was removed and painted in red gloss paint on top of grey primer. Other correct Gold Cloverleaf modifications were: headlight wipers, 'clear' front indicators, silver grille, matt black wheel centres, black gloss sill stripe and grey bumper inserts.

The Alfasud Gold Cloverleaf, for those that don't know, was a hot family orientated variant of the 'sud produced in 1982-1983. It had the same 2x twinchoke carburettors, 95bhp 'Veloce' engine as the Alfasud Ti and TiX but with 5 doors.

My Father bought one new in November 1982 as his first (of many) Alfa Romeo. It provided daily transport for 5 members of my family over about 17 years, including a holiday trip to Italy in 1984. I owned it from May 1989 until April 1992 and it was excellent.

Alfasud arrives with free Italian stamp collection

I've been planning trying to make a mini replica Alfasud Gold Cloverleaf, like the one I (and 4 other family members) owned many years ago. I found a 1:43 5 door 'sud SC model in Italy for sale on Ebay that not only had plastic bumpers and steel wheels, but also a brown interior. It arrived quickly in a padded envelope completely covered on one side in Italian stamps. It has a number of quite old stamps too with many in Lira denominations.

Work has started on the mini 'sud, which will be painted red and have headlight wipers, and I intend to frame the stamp collection...

Alfa scuttle and front end clean up

As it had been a number of years since the scuttle cover(and wiper motor + mechanism) and front inner wing liners were removed from the 33 I thought I'd go through the process again before the weather got too cold and miserable.

The scuttle was absolutely caked in sludge and filth and so this was all cleaned up and then basted in waxoyl. One wing liner had a split repaired with pond liner and tigerseal and everything behind the liners was cleaned up and waxoyled too.

I even used another offcut of pond liner to make a cover for the scuttle vents to help reduce filth ingress whilst the car is parked up near to trees and bushes.

Formula Shell

I spotted a lovely white 1983 BMW 323i locally that not only sported it's original rear window dealer sticker but also a Formula Shell gallons to litres conversion table sticker in the rear side window, near the fuel filler.

I'm guessing this sticker would have been fitted in the mid 1980s when the BMW was just a couple of years old, as I can remember Formula Shell being launched around then, roughly the same time as the switch from gallons to litres at the petrol pumps, which was probably just a ploy to confuse the consumer into not noticing the rapidly rising cost of fuel quite so much.
